How sad and empty does someone’s life have to be that they’ll pore over every panel in a comic– which they absolutely did not pay for, by the way– trying desperately to spot a familiar pose, just so they can cry about it in the vain hope that anybody wil care on a cartoon horse image aggregator site?

For the record, Hasbro has generally been pretty tolerant with stuff. For example, the introduction of a gay couple in the IDW Transformers comics was run through them and they gave it the okay. And since then, there have been a number of same-sex couples here and there. The thing is they don’t draw attention to it; it’s just there as a simple fact of life. Likewise, I’m pretty sure that Hasbro had to okay that whole ‘best friends’ (nudge nudge, wink wink) stuff between Bonbon and Lyra in the anniversary episode.

The Rawhide Kid comic I mention was so offensively gay I seriously couldn’t believe Marvel okayed it. Making a version of the tough cowboy Rawhide Kid gay was something I was a bit wary of, but was willing to give it a shot. But he was, like, almost every horrible gay stereotype rolled into one; a twisted parody of the original Rawhide. I sincerely doubt IDW would make so stupid a decision, and I have even more faith that Hasbro would never allow it.

I used to wonder what on Earth and Cybertron an atheist-fanatic even was, but after listening to people mockingly refer to ‘a space wizard’ or treating people as stupid for believing in a higher power (incidentally why I can never laugh at David Mitchell again) I find them nearly as annoying as religious-fanatics.

Yeesh, at least MLP hasn’t gotten that bad yet.

That’s funny, ‘cause somebody online called me a “disease,” or something just because I’m christian before.
(I honestly see no difference between religious-fanatics, and atheist-fanatics personally.)

Huh. Nah, I’m good. I was just curious about what the controversy would be. I thought it might’ve been something like writing an offensively stereotypical gay character (like that stupidly offensive Rawhide Kid comic Marvel put out) or putting in obvious religious (either pro-or anti-) undertones (like that X-Men comic where the writer equated religion to horrible diseases, “but at least we try to cure cancer”).

I hate to bring it up, as that situation is a very touchy situation, (in fact, some still hate IDW to this day over it) but basically…

||In the 2014 Special Annual issue of the comic, (The “Power Ponies” one) the writer Ted Anderson asked the artist to insert a fan-OC cameo of a “friend” of his in the background, whom turned out to be “Dragondicks” a fake-feminst person who encouraged backwards-sexism hatred of men, and bronies on a blog of her’s, even drawing anti-brony images. (Even though, ironically she’s basically a female brony.)
Basically, all hell broke loose on both sides of the argument. (Didn’t help that Ted got involved too.) IDW claimed Ted got chewed out over that, and the offending image will be removed in future reprints of the book, and they’ll be more careful of the content that goes in, but many are still angry he didn’t get fired over it, (feeling it meant IDW “supports” Ted’s viewpoints) and such. ||

The situation is one of the first controversial things to start making fans become more divided on the IDW MLP comic series. If you wish to research it more, just type in “Anderson drama” in the search bar, but it might be best to just let old dramas die.

People still obsess on that?

I think what bugs me most about the Fosgitt-drama is, as I’ve said before, he’s held to a different standard then other IDW artists. While I understand he’s not perfect, or lately as good as he used to be, but I see people complain about the most minor things wrong with his art, while ignoring the same, or different mistakes others have. (I guess they don’t care, as long as it looks exactly like the show style…)
I mean Agnes Garbowska (not hating on her, but she’s not perfect either) draws the characters differently modeled in almost every single panel, and hardly gives them eyebrows or foreheads, (or even lower jaws sometimes) or gives them off snouts, but I never once saw anyone critique her art here, nor say it looked “bad.” (The “I’m a sock-puppet” example below being the closest thing to a criticism on her art I’ve ever seen.)
Honestly, I prefer Fosgitt, even at his worst over her, but I don’t hate her art honestly, nor constantly bash her. (I can even admit, sometimes her art can be good, and cute sometimes.)

I remember some used to bash Tony Fleecs, or Andy Price over both understandable, or trivial things too, (like how Andy draws Spike) and before Fosgitt, Katie Cook’s story writing used to get alot of controversy, and hate here. But now all of a sudden, nobody ever criticises any other artists, or anything, but Fosgitt now. Even if something of his appears that’s good, or just “tolerable,” then people froth at the mouth with anger. “ZOMG! THE LEGS ARE DRAWN SLIGHTLY OFF! BURN THE WITCH!”

I’m NOT demonizing ALL his critics, I even agree with some that his newer art isn’t quite as good as his older issues, or cover art. I’m just saying it’s going overboard, and even some who dislike his art are getting tired of the madness any time any image of his is posted here.
It’s also terrible some are attacking him directly/personally too, (according to Jay himself) or trying to get him fired. (Good luck, you guys couldn’t even get the controversial writer Ted Anderson fired, but let’s not bring up that ancient drama…)

Huh. I don’t know how comics work nowadays (my last concrete info on how comics work was Stan Lee’s Marvel method), but my understanding is that after the writer is done writing, the artwork is then the responsibility of the artist, right?

In the Transformers case I mentioned before, the artist was supposed to draw in the team of Autobots called the Protectobots. In-universe, this would’ve been the first time they were all together, and so the artist was only familiar with a few of them and needed reference materials. Unfortunately, he was somehow given the references for the wrong characters and dutifully drew them in. So in this case, the artist did take the time to do his research, but somehow got the wrong reference materials. And before people complain about using Google or something, it isn’t unusual for Transformers to get new names like the Dinobot Slag briefly being called Snarl in toylines and stuff (despite Snarl being a different Dinobot) before settling on Slug.

So I wonder if this hiccup came about because while Fosgitt and the others were working on the issue, the episode with Greta and Grandpa Gus hadn’t come out yet and so they didn’t have reference materials to use (again, an example would be how IDW’s Bayverse Transformers comics used outdated designs for characters because the artists didn’t have access to the updated ones). Did the issue make any references to Greta and Grandpa Gus’ appearance on the show?

See, for me the only issue I had with Fosgitt’s Greta design is that from my understanding (again, I tend to avoid his work so I don’t own the comic) it’s supposed to be the same Greta from the show. Can someone confirm this for me? I mean, if it’s just another gryphon named Greta then no problem.

I can separate what I like or don’t like about an artist into how good they are at designing, how good they are at actual artwork and their overall attitude (which is admittedly what I care about the least). So I don’t have any issues with the Greta design per se (as long as it’s not meant to be the same character), I like when he draws characters in motion but also feel that his animals are better than his ponies (and he often over exaggerates even with characters that aren’t known for being energetic or goofy), and I really don’t pay attention to social media so his behaviour with the fandom isn’t an issue.

@Background Pony #FDE6

Yeah, I always get surprised when people don’t realise that not everyone sees the world the same way. For example, I seriously don’t understand why assholes like Wolverine or Grimlock are popular, I think Batman is absolutely useless as a defender of the innocent and I don’t have a high opinion of Steven Universe or Legend of Korra.

In the first case, I often have to deal with jerkwads like Wolverine who go off and do whatever they want (and I’m often part of the group that has to clean up after them) and so hate that type of character. I used to love Batman, but after so many games and comics about his villains constantly breaking out and killing hundreds of people I think he’s useless. I watched both Steven Universe and Legend of Korra, but I couldn’t get into them (though I loved Legend of Aang).

This doesn’t mean there’s anything wrong with me, or you if you do like all these things. I won’t be able to understand why you like them, but it’s not like you physically cause me harm by liking them.

I remember back when people were trying to accuse Fosgitt of art-theft from fanartist Equestria-Prevails, (Honestly, the armor designs were very generic, and not too different from what we’ve seen in the show, so they weren’t all that “unique,” so it could’ve been a coincidence. There’s also the possibility Fosgitt or an editor mistook the armor art as official work off of Google, and used it as reference. Sega & Sumo made that mistake too years ago with a Sonia the Hedgehog fanartist) they were trying to get Equestria-Prevails in on the hate train, but everyone became shocked when Prevails said they actually like Fosgitt’s art, and didn’t care if he used their designs.

Y’know, allow me to quote something I said earlier that kinda sums up the irony of how people are amazed Fosgitt has fans.
Y’know, I keep seeing people here trying to shame Fosgitt fans, such as making remarks like, “I can’t understand why anyone would like Fosgitt’s art. There’s no logical reason for them too. There’s something wrong with them.”
It reminds me of people who say things like, “I can’t understand why anyone would watch a cartoon for little girls. There’s no logical reason for them too. There’s something wrong with them.”

You. I like you.

@TexasUberAlles: “…it’s completely impossible to accept that anyone might actually like Fosgitt’s style.”
Bingo; that’s my exact problem with the majority of complaints about Fosgitt’s art. (Great examples of that behavior in this very comment thread, in fact, with all those comments that are absolutely gobsmacked that another artist might actually like his style.)

Indeed, dislikin, or criticising his art is one thing,.. Obsessing over it, or seeking him out, attacking him personally, (I saw somebody actually say they want him “dead” before) trying to get him fired, (good luck, people couldn’t even get Ted Anderson fired) >>1466229 making the same hater remarks on nearly every image of his here is another.

Also, I don’t get why everything has to be “show accurate.” Only other unique artist in the official merchandise is in the Sea pony book. >>158254 I remember some bashed it too, but I think the art is quite nice. I wish bronies would be open to other styles…
In fact, honestly when I first saw the G4 MLP:FiM Lauren Faust art style for the first time, (before I became a fan/brony) I didn’t like it at first, thought they looked too modern “simplistic shaped, with anime eyes” cartoon-like, but then it grew on me, as I watched the show, and found the off-model humorous facial expressions, and such to be the best part of the show. So even the show doesn’t always stick to one art style.

@WM-R
Yeah, if that is the case, everyone who was demonizing him over that now look quite petty.

And honestly, I thought his chubby Greta design was kinda adorable, and more unique then the “typical” griffin OC design she had in the show. I’m probably the only one who prefers it.

@TexasUberAlles
I can’t even comprehend the level of entitlement involved in deliberately seeking out free (illegal) online scans of a comic for the sole purpose of screaming about how disappointing they are.

THIS… Why should a comic even cater to people who don’t even support it? Most of the ones I see who complain about it, say they don’t even read/buy ’em. It reminds me of Sonic fans on DA who do the same with the Sonic comics, and think they can judge an entire issue based on seeing only 5 panels, or THREE pages…
