You’d have nightmares if you saw a newborn equine’s hoof right after birth.
Viewing this is NOT for the faint of heart.
They are like that to prevent damaging their mother during gestation and birth, but harden after only a few minutes into the hooves you are more familiar with, which is roughly around the time they start walking.
Ah, I see. Still horrifying though… hoof nails…

those are what Eohippus, the 47 mil year old ancestor of horses, had for hooves
