To be fair, it’s not far off being a comic. (And there are some mini-comics that definitively count as comics, since they involve several scenes per page and so on)  
While Siden is a great artist, I don’t think the Ultimare Universe would be as popular without the various below-image descriptions, dialogue, and such ‘fleshing out’ the characters and world.
 
Visual artists can make original work without writers, yes, but I don’t feel this counts when they started off the blog with several paragraphs of text per picture.  
That is someone who has talents as both a visual artist and a writer making original work - which isn’t unusual.

Can someone help me understand? Is this from a fanfic or comic or something? Or is this just a thing that exists because it can? How did all this begin? It’s cool from what I’ve seen, but there is no explanation anywhere to what it’s from. All I see is Ultimare and a few pics, but nothing else.

They are, just alternate universe versions of them with different names. Don’t ask me why that constitutes OC tags, but it does.
