Some cars don’t have lower gears to choose from. I saw a third generation Caravan that only had P-R-N-D. Maybe not all third generation Caravans are like that though.

Only time I’ve ever seen it happen either; I’ve had the braking surfaces of pads literally fall off the steel backing plate because they cracked and shattered, but it still didn’t pull the %$#& pins out.
… I’ve never heard of this happening before and I’m having a “What on earth” moment.
Ass PitAspen) I had the brake pads wear down so low they pulled the caliper pins out and dumped all the brake fluid at once. At 40mph in heavy traffic. Approaching a red light with lots of cross-traffic. Parking brake didn’t work.Lucky. I had to drive across a major navigable waterway and through the downtown area of the largest city in my area. X3
My breaks died too, unfortunately I was on the highway. Luckily I knew a slow, unpopulated route back home.

my point was that it’s the old cars that are the problem, not the lights. I’m not saying you should plug them into old cars and expect them to work without modification.
I was saying the gist of what I heard was that the older cars didn’t recognize LEDs were in the slots. Dunno if it’s true, I wasn’t saying “not being wasteful enough” was a deficiency but that’s funny to think about.

I found a 4,000 lumen 5,000kelvin (daylight equivalent) 400w equivalent LED light that only uses 38w.
It costs ~$40.

well, not just that LEDs last longer. they use easily a tenth of the power of an incandescent for the same lumins, and they won’t burn you if you touch them.
I have a dinky LED flashlight that’s been running on 3 AAAs for a year.
I’ve heard of a bulb that is still going.

Thinking of switching to LED lights myself. $10 for a 100w equivalent that will last several years at reduced cost; yes please.

I’ve taken them to the recycling facility (Home Depot) but I threw a few away too. I did have one CFL bulb that lasted over seven years. It wasn’t the cheapest one I could have bought though; it was not Walmart brand.

I’ve heard of cases where people tried to put LED headlights (or were they turn signals?) in older cars and they didn’t work because they used so little energy that the car acted as if a bulb was out. There’s that; it requires modification.

w-well I take them to a hazardous waste facility. the mercury isn’t too bad in them I’ve heard, but heavy metals accumulate toxicity, so a lot can be bad.
LED lights are p. much superior in every way
The modern version is the Compact Flourescent greenwashing scam, where they don’t last anywhere near as long as advertised, and are an environmental nightmare in the making because they contain mercury in the bulbs and heavy metals in the silicon chip. How many people actually take CFLs to a hazardous waste facility like it says to do on the package, and how many just toss ’em in the trash bound for a landfill?
oh, on a related note, I recently read that one of the classic examples of planned obsolesence was that in the 1920’s all the light bulb manufacturers got together and agreed to alter the design of their light bulbs so they would burn out after 1000 hours where formerly light bulbs had often kept going for decades.
