Given how old she might be, I imagined she used to be some sort of activist who slowly became the very sort of authoritarian despot she hated because nothing she tried ever worked and she became terrified that no one would ever remember after she died.

Yeah, what happened to her?
I imagine that she maintained consistently high grades so she could qualify for the Friendship Games in her senior year. But when grades came out, she missed her spot by half a point. And not even her reputation could save her, even though two of the qualifying students had later found to have cheated on their tests. This set up her philosophy about “reputation” and so forth, and when she became Principal she used it ruthlessly.
