I think Milk was like a family name, like Rich is. That, and I think ponies sometimes have a bit or clairvoyance when it comes to naming their kids, and she ended up marrying a member of the Rich family, so her name ended up making even more sense.

I’ve been racking my brains for what could possibly have been a decent reason to name your child “Spoiled Milk” and about the only thing I’ve come up with is that her family has a tradition of naming by omens. She was born and the milk spoiled that day, so Spoiled Milk she is.
 
Gad, you can hardly blame her for being such a prune with a name like that. Poor girl.

Speaking of terrible names, it makes me wonder what Sarah Palin pony named HER foals.

Spoiled Milk is such a stupid name for her. I prefer what Deadpansnarker calls her: Spoiled Rotten. It is a much better name.

I have a headcanon:  
The Milk family is one of the oldest and most entitled earth pony families in Equestria. They even claim they can trace their lineage back before the founding of Equestria, hence their family being named after a food.  
However, the family recently fell on hard times due to a foolish patriarch nearly bankrupting them with bad investments. So, his wife decided to marry their daughter, Spoiled Milk, to Filthy Rich, the heir of a nouveau riche family.  
It’s the marriage of a family with a title but no money, to a family money but no title. Think of the arranged marriage from Tim Burton’s Corpse Bride.  
That’s why Spoiled’s cutie mark is a ring. Her “special talent” is being married.

Some have surnames/firstnames while others just have firstname, some have a theme going on while others are just random  
Here is something weird: Shining Armor calls Twilight Sparkle by a nickname “Twily”, but their mother also is called “Twilight”, twilight velvet

Just imagine if Rich got her second name instead. Filthy Milk.

Granny Smith actually said AB was VERY young at this time and it’s commonly assumed whatever claimed the Apple parents happened shortly after AB was born.
 
it also implies that Diamond Tiara was born in the following year since these two in the pic are due to be wed, making AB nearly a year older than her.

Do you think they bounded over their horrible names?

Does this mean that Diamond Tiara isn’t born yet? Assuming she and Apple Bloom are in the same class, AJ’s parents must still be alive during the episode. (Otherwise they couldn’t conceive her…)
 
Of course, maybe Diamond Tiara’s birth is the reason Spoiled and Filthy got married, and both DT and AB are alive.
 
But if that’s not the case, this episode shows the age gap between Apple Bloom and AJ. AJ’s a frickin teenager when Apple Bloom wasn’t even born!

Darn I liked my headcanon that it was Spoiled Rotten.
