Well, the Guardians of Harmony annual actually took place after the events of season five and Friendship Games but during the first six episodes of season six and before the season six finale. Because in the comic, Fire Streak is still a Wonderbolt before his retirement prior to the events of “Newbie Dash” and the changelings were still loyal to Queen Chrysalis before they can rebel and switch their alligances to be loyal to King Thorax and turn on Queen Chrysalis who is overthrowned by Thorax in “To Where and Back Again”.
And we didn’t even get to see Chrysalis and the changelings impersonating the Royal Sisters and the Royal Crystal Family in “To Where and Back Again”.
You mean the comics is set after season 5 and Friendship Games but during the first six episodes of season six?

Either that or she still had a few forces outside her kingdom when she was defeated, we never did find out what happened to the changelings that were impersonating the mane six, Spike, the royal sisters, and the crystal family.
Simply the events of this comic took place before the ending of the season 6.

I don’t think GoH is meant to be canonical, so consider it a side timeline.
No way to know for sure, but most likely takes place before.

Probably including Tirek and Sombra too because why not.
That’s an interesting theory. A bit farfetched but it would explain why there was no green/blue fire when they shapefited into the Shadowbolt forms.
That’s actually a point I hadn’t considered. Thorax proved it was possible for changelings to disguise themselves as inanimate objects, and since there don’t seem to be any size limitations that black smoke could have just been part of the disguises all along.
9/10. Looking forward to the rest of the comic. The one thing I DIDN’T like was AJ just bursting in and yelling “Chrysalis is invading!” just seems too out of nowhere and sudden.

Eh, I’m pretty sure it’ll turn out just like this one, which chryssy pretending to be nightmare moon to play mind games with celestia.
Like taking on the form of Luna at first, grousing at celestia and then transforming into NMM to make it seem like she got pissed off at celestia again, and then dissapearing to drive a wedge between luna and celestia.@Anon-a-Miss
I’ll admit that I disliked that they weren’t real shadowbolts and that that was kind of misleading, but changelings have magic too, they could have conjured that up as an illusion.
Its been hard trying to find out who is to blame for lately.

Unless they are planning to surprise us with giving us a sympathetic Chrysalis but given that this is the comics, that would be asking too much.
As if IDW would decide any differently, considering they’ve decided it and everything else about Chrysalis over the past 3-4 years where the most interaction Hasbro had with them probably amounted to rubber stamping. And that “everything else” matters a lot.
But we don’t know how NMM is involved yet.
Until shown otherwise I’m just gonna assume something like A) a Changeling saw Dash’s shadowbolt Nightmare Night costume and asked a couple questions or B) Dash, being Dash, can’t go 2 days without bragging all about how and what she did to save Equestria from NMM.
That’s more Hasbro’s decision than IDW, they are the ones who decided she would be the main villain of this story and toyline.
The whole “Chrysalis has no redeeming values and should be the only true villain” shtick that IDW thinks should be the right choice to establish? I wish that weren’t the truth.
I really want the same kind of enjoyment I get from the show back in the comics again.
