It’s how they breed :D Two mix together, do their thing, split apart, and one becomes pregnant as a result. Which one does is completely random, and since they don’t have biological genders it could be either one. They have a physical “gender”, as in their default form, voice, mannerisms, etc can be male or female, but biologically they have only one gender. Side effect of a monogender species adapting to mimic one with two genders :D
