Nonetheless, the statistics gathered here are still valid - looks like more people think it’s rotating rather than layered :P
just wanted to make sure you knew.
Sorry, when drawing it, I kinda had anthro-dash in mind, hence the lack of straight line hair :B
Ok, fair point… kinda.
I’m trying to help with the drawing, which looks like the hair is growing out coronally, rather than medially.
So, what does it change exactly and why is this important for the ongoing argument? Yes, it grows in one ridge, the ridge has volume and culminates in large amounts of hair on top of the head, so what? It doesn’t really change anything :/
When the show began they only had one “side” profile which they flipped. You can see this often in their manes. They eventually started doing the mane correctly. But they’re inconsistent. Sometimes they use them, sometimes they don’t.
I’m not sure what you mean. They might orient the different angles inconsistently but they are different.
it doesn’t have to be razor thin, but it is still a single ridge, not hair growing out all over the scalp.
They grow out of a line that’s not razor-thin. The mane has volume, as does the tail. There’s an early episode with Dash seen flying at a nearly three-quarters from behind perspective. You can tell her tail is 2D and completely flat.
That’s the limitation I’m talking about.
As the show has gone on they’ve put more effort into them. Hair is the most-notable change. And they’ve kept cutie marks on other characters consistent regardless of side more often in the past few years. But their default models still are simply flipped.
horse manes only grow out of a line down the middle of their head and neck. it’s not a 2D limitation it’s true in real life.
Right.
But they don’t always use them, only sometimes.
That’s incorrect. The Mane 6 at least have differently designed profiles.
I understand that. I prefer the look of the show, as well. But you’ve got to keep in mind the limitations of the animation. Each character’s full body profile is only designed from one side, their left. And then they’re flipped when needed. Otherwise you’d have to believe that Twilight’s mane highlights magically flip sides just because she turns. And cutie marks get flipped even when it messes up their meaning (Filthy Rich is a good example.) So not every feature will make a perfect translation when seen from other angles. And one of those are their manes, which from behind look like a flag when they run.
Oh. Well, personally I trust the show’s assets over merch like that, but that’s just me.
I know what her mane looks like in the show. I said that’s due to the limitations of 2D images. The characters are 2D Flash vectors.
In 3D space (AKA actual physical merchandise) her mane isn’t like that. She has a head of hair like the left image above.

@Zharkaer
That’s the limitations of the 2D flash assets. Just like Twilight’s highlights switch sides when she does, they just flip her vector. In a 3D world, Dash would have the hair on the left. And in fact, for show-accurate figures and such, they do have hair like that.
it’s the tiny details that matter. Dash needs to be show-accurate to be the cutest pony :)
Ah, then couple the other molded models of her to get an estimation from the aggregate appearances of her mane. Ooh, plus her Gameloft 3D model.
…Wait, maybe the top down birds’ eye perspective from Lesson Zero could work better. Sorry about the rambling. That’s just how I think. >w<
The Funko figure is incorrect. They messed up the front by adding blue to it. The only version of her that’s correct is the limited metalized version.
