I actually considered making something like this for Friendship is Card Games. The problem is that Magic: the Gathering does not lend itself well to this sort of thing. There are five “suits” in the colors, some cards can be of multiple suits or none at all, and neither suit nor the most logical number to use, converted mana cost, is evenly distributed.

Of course, when you’re making up the game as you go along, that’s hardly an issue.
