They usually eat it because hay is dried for the winter and in the winter there is not much else to eat.
horses can’t swallow dry hay
I don’t know what y’all had goin’ on there in particular, but a healthy horse most certainly can swallow dry hay.

Hey now, don’t give tjpones ideas… some people will enjoy that a bit too much.
It requires balance. If you don’t do enough horse things you cease to be a horse in anything but shape, more like a human with hooves (Lyra is headed this way) while doing too many horse things makes you more of a horse and less of a member of pony society (as Big Mac is headed).
i used to work with horses, and i remember we pass the hay through water so they could eat it

At least when its green it looks fresh.

This is really a no-win double standard with ponies. They’re horses when it suits them and ponies (which are TOTALLY DIFFERENT) when it doesn’t.
