“Oh come on, I don’t do that!”

Then they have to part ways and go home. Unfortunately, their mutual guardians got them mixed up and take the wrong ones home. Nobody notices for a few days.
They might like each other and will let the other borrow their outfits, but sharing socks is asking too much.

I think there’s a couple of factors at play there. One is that overalls tend to be more of a kids type of clothing, so there’s some cuteness right there. Plus they tend to be a bit baggy, so there’s your oversized clothing thing as well. Plus, I think there’s a sort of inherent simplicity to them, something which gives it a bit of an innocent demeanor.
