Extortion, basically. Sure, the earth ponies control the food supply, but the pegasi control the weather and the unicorns control the day/night cycle. Really, all three were locked in a case of mutual resentment and codependence.
Plus, the earth ponies represented the peasantry, as opposed to the nobility or the military. They might not have been oppressed, but their aesthetic certainly was.
Also, twisting the facts to better fit the narrative. I have to justify a depressed Puddinghead somehow. :P
I think it’s a misunderstanding of the concept.
It’s people actively keeping you from doing things, not, people can do things you can’t for whatever reason.
People keep making this interpretation, but how were the Earth Ponies oppressed? They’ve always been the ones with all the food, that’s a fairly big bargaining chip, plus they’re aware of this fact and I can’t imagine it would be very easy oppressing a group that knows they hold a resources nobody can live without
