Fleetfoot: takes out toothbrush and spits out foamApplejack’s?
Rainbow: What? No, Twilight’s. Of course I got Big Macintosh to come. Now, about that deal we had.
Fleetfoot: Okay, okay. Expect your half in the mail sometime this week. And if you want extra, there’s this Tea Room in Canterlot that needs a bit of… Re-decorating. If you catch my drift…
Yes. And since bitter tastes often signify poisons, evolution made the receptors for bitterness especially resistant to being leached out of your tongue. You won’t die from missing the taste of sugar or meat (though you may wish you did). But you could die from failing to notice the bitter taste of atropine in a berry you put in your mouth.
Basically, a chemical in toothpaste turns off some of your tastebuds, but only some, so when you taste something, you only get certain parts of the flavor.
…Yeah!

So does eating Fromager d’Affinois cheese. The sodium lauryl sulfate in toothpaste, or the sheer amount of butterfat in extra-cream brie, dissolves certain taste receptors out of your tastebuds. Stimulating the ones remaining confuses the cells, so many bitter tastes come through without any of the usual flavor complexity that makes the foods taste good.
fact
But brushing your teeth first makes breakfast taste awful.
Some people do that. I know I do.
Brushing your teeth in the morning is more about cleaning out the bacteria that congregated in your mouth overnight; your natural saliva production during the day takes care of breaking down whatever food is left after meals. (Saliva production is greatly reduced when you’re sleeping, which allows bacteria to grow more freely, and leads to morning breath and stuff like that.)
I can’t claim credit for it; just a minor ponification. I think it dates back to at least my own father’s childhood. The original is:
In days of old,
When knights were bold,
And toilets weren’t invented,
Men dropped their load,
In the middle of the road,
And walked away,
Contented.
That is a brilliant poem. (Though I think the meter and rhythm work out better if you change “Pones” to “Ponies”.)
Yes, it’s quite weird! She looks better with Twilight and Spitfire’s eye model, like in Rainbow Falls.
In days of old,
When steeds were bold,
And toilets weren’t invented,
Pones dropped their load,
In the middle of the road,
And walked away,
Contented.
Except for Starlight and maybe Bonbon, they don’t seem very modest about it; Spike didn’t mind Starlight walking in on him. Pinkie Pie left no question about her needs in Dodge Junction (nor did Applejack or even a fancy pony like Cherry Jubilee try to come out of the outhouse without drawing attention), and Pinkie’s own bathroom seems to be a gathering place. The Re-Ned-Ucation center in Our Town was one room serving as eating place, reading material, bedroom, bathroom, and prison cell. Even Bonbon’s toilet seems to be right inside her front door, and not separated from the rest of the first floor of her house. Plus it’s hard to say her shocked expression had anything to do with everypony in Ponyville suddenly seeing her in the bathroom; her house blowing away could very well have explained that all by itself. And Rarity, who actually is modest about merely being naked (even though she usually is naked most of the time) didn’t seem modest about using a need to visit the “little fillies’ room” as an excuse to leave Twilight’s birthday party.
Here I done sexuality sugestive comment on this ep : P
