It hasn’t really stopped, I just rarely have time for making it lately. Well, “lately” as in the past 2 years. I’m still hopeful to finish at least the main storyline one way or another.
 
As for your number change, my guess is that this website is basing it on your IP. If your IP changes, so does your number. But that’s just my hunch, take it with a grain of salt. :)  
I do love how they all get different icons too.

if the heartstrings project is stopped, then at least it had a good run, but i always check this picture all the time  
to see if there is any news or to see if the new or a new picture got uploaded.

The comic apparently is still ongoing, but the artist is also busy with other projects.

it was like last january or something and i am starting to get the feeing that tritebristle is done writing the comic(not uploading anymore comic panels), i hope that tritebristle will keep on creating more panels

If you make an account (and login), you get notifications for other people commenting on the same image as you. Basically, it ‘subscribes’ you to the image automatically if you comment, but you can also subscribe to the image without commenting.
 
The notifications appear as a number next to ‘filters’ at the top (when you’re logged in). You click on it and it takes you the notifications page to see who has commented on what image.
 
If you wanna stay ‘anonymous’, you can click a checkbox to ‘post anonymously’ before you comment so you appear like a Background Pony (plus you get other advantages with an account like filters, favouriting etc.)
 
And yeah, I love Heartstrings so much. I can’t wait either!
