@Nightweaver20xx
I don’t think that was an invitation…
I have an idea of what’s behind the curtain, largely due to physics studies, but I understand and respect the need for secrecy on these things, so…
God knows what those guys get up to with that huge black budget. It’s many times larger than NASA’s, iirc.
Portable fusion power.
The companies and agencies that design these weapons (Lockheed, DARPA, Boeing General Dynamics etc) tend to be 5-10 years ahead of other nations.
Lasers and rail guns aren’t secret anymore, Now try to imagine what is.
Only is they have detailed specs. Those are still highly classified.
Reverse engineering. But everyone else is far enough behind that they probably won’t be able to.
Also theoretically if someone knows your capabilities they can find a counter by knowing exactly what they have to worry about.
Theoretically.
Why hide it? “Hey, we’ve got a weapon that goes at the speed of light, is invisible, and can take down anything from ICBMs to ASMs to attack jets to Surface vessels.”
If it were built during wartime with a nation with comparable capacity, I’d agree, but in this age of asynchronous warfare, it is a great deterrent to attack.
Edited
Oh yeah. I was gonna ask if that was classified and what you’re doing saying that if it is, lol, but now I remember I did hear about that once.
Sheesh. Seems like the cutting edge sort of thing that would be classified, though, heh.
Well, it IS ship-mounted now.
Hah, I shouldn’t be surprised. That’s awesome.
Directed energy weapon technology has been greatly improved since the YAL-1.
Laser weapons are now compact enough to hypothetically be mounted to an aircraft as small as an F-22 Raptor while being powerful enough to quickly destroy incoming threats.
I think the vast majority of the weight and volume on the YAL 1 is just the fuel and oxidizer to burn for the power.
But I think better cooling would allow for a hotter, shorter burst that takes less overall energy, so better cooling might be key to reducing energy requirements.
Not to mention cooling….
Well, they really struggled to get the 1 MW laser on a 747 airframe, so… YAL-1 ABL.
Main issue is the power source.
I think the tech has improved a good bit, but not sure by how much.

Very light, efficient single-place, with great durability. I can take 4 passengers plus baggage. I doubt that the laser would actually fit, but it would be fun to try.
Cessna 180. Bush plane I inherited from my grandfather 10 years ago.
180?
Hell, I’ll take the 100mw and mount it on my 180.
Because I fucking can.
We need a man-portable 10MW laser for… reasons.
A 1 MW laser can destroy ballistic missiles during their boost phase.
A 10MW laser would have little issue vaporizing an ass. (No offense to actual donkeys xp )
A 100MW is just for fun xD
Fuck that. Make sure he’s dead with an Odin platform. Just like nuking him from orbit, it’s the only way to be sure (without a nuclear winter)
Agreed. I cried a little on the inside (like Applejack) when that one appeared in “Testing, Testing, 123” - never mind the setting doesn’t really fit that tech so well >.>
She can work analysis or something.
I’m busy on the Manehatten project, myself.
Oh wait, this is modern? Ehh, I mean the Star Wars Initiative. Gonna assassinate Sombra from orbit with a 100-MW class laser. That’s the real reason we developed the Space Shuttle during wartime.
