A lot of folks, (even fans of the comic) didn’t like that issue, I recall. It made the CMC come off as very mean-spirited, even if they did apologize (and hug) Sunset.
 
Still, they did get one funny brief scene in the first movie. (And the nod to “Show Stoppers” with their costumes in their “Rainbow Rocks” cameos was a nice touch.)
 
It would be nice if the EqG CMC (though, I think they’re just called the “Cutie Crusaders” in this version according to the merch’) got their own short, or something, or got to do more in the next movie. (If there is a fourth.)

They were just there to be the antagonist of a comic. Tirek has a bigger role in Why am I Crying? than the CMC do in Equestria Girls proper.

Come to think of it, the CMC never really get to do much in EqG.
