Season 8 Episode Discussion [Spoilers, possible leaks, rumours etc.]

I beat LoZ:BotW!!!
Nice thing about the leaks, I get to write this up in advance!
What I liked:
Twilight: She was great here, wanting to give something back to her mentor but screwing it up in her own Twilight way, not OOC and understandable here, she was great.
Spike: But her #1 assistant was even better. Nice to see Spike get a really good role, showcasing his best as a voice of reason, giving both snark and advice at the same time. It actually surprises me that they were able to get both Spike and Applejack giving common sense advice yet not throwing one under the bus for the other (Well outside of the juggling bit).
Princess Celestia: Really given a nice chance to shine here (for the most part but we’ll get back to that later) giving some insight into her desires, her back and her character. Really good here. And she knows the Canterlot Royal Voice, nice.
The snark: There are just some really good one liners like “Do I even want to know?” and “See that right there, that was the best acting we’ve seen all day.” Those were just so good to see the show go back for a bit to the more cynical jokes every once in a while.
The Mane 6: They all have a role here which is something I like to see happen more often, from Fluttershy’s acting (She’s going to take over Celestia’s position later in the series finale and nobody will be quite sure how) , to Pinkie Pie’s props, to Applejack’s advice, the only one that really doesn’t come up with anything is Rarity, but I’ll get back to that.
What I didn’t like:
Starlight: Wow what a shock, said nobody ever. She didn’t need to be here at all. She’s excess baggage that adds literally nothing to the story. Every other character has at least some role, but nope just got to insert her here because reasons. And then they give her Rarity’s line just to give her something to say. Ugh.
The Student 6: This is the second time we’ve seen them and they don’t even have lines. Really disappointing they weren’t really used other than as props more or less, but 15 character would have been too much for this episode. (We’ll get to an episode where that’s an issue later in the season)
Pinkie Pie: Kind of a bit too disconnected from everything that’s going on, kind of like in Filli Vanilli. Not her best portrayal.
The Sitting: Okay yeah bringing this up but Celestia sitting on a chair up right just looks wrong.
Acting School: The whole scene where Celestia is so completely dumbfounded by basic acting is really overexaggerated. I get they put that in to showcase Celestia not being a good actor but there’s not being good at something and then there’s burying your head under the ground…in a sandstorm…five miles underground…on Pluto. That was a bit of overkill.
Let’s do the Time Warp Again: OKAY WILL SOMEONE EXPLAIN WHAT THE FUCK HAPPENED IN EQUESTRIA’S PAST? I mean what the fuck happened 1,111 year ago? Starswirl is needed to raise the Sun before Equestria, and so are five other unicorns, but what the fuck did they do before Starswirl? Is it just something they pasted down? If the unicorns were running low on numbers, how were they able to keep the Sun going for so long? Were they able to keep the Sun moving? Did something else raise the Sun before the Unicorns? How is not having anymore Unicorns going to cause eternal night? Why not just leave the Sun up if nothing else? And how freaking old is Starswirl? I mean he taught Clover the Clever, who helped found Equestria, and this is before Celestia appeared, so how freaking old is he? Did this all happen right before Shadow Play? Ugh this make no sense.
Weird sidenote: Is this the first time we’ve seen a crescent Moon in the show? Cause usually whenever they show it, it’s full, which kind of makes sense since it’s usually portrayed on the opposite side of the sun
So yeah I really enjoyed this one, pretty solid overall, but, and I’m writing this ahead of time, I don’t like it as much as y’all are going to praise it, just saying.

Dude are you serious? What do you mean no reason to be there? It’s a school play and she’s the school’s councilor. It’s not like she’s Twilight appearing at the CMC’s play at the last second to steal the show or anything. This made perfect since.

No matter what they did with Starlight, you would still complain.

No she has no reason to be here at all. All the rest of the Mane 6 had a purpose, well except Rarity and that’s because Starlight stole her line, she had no reason to be here

That was probably the first and last Celestia episode we’ll ever see. I was hoping it would be something more along the lines of Celestia being the one that learns something in an episode instead of someone else. But whatever, the character was never designed that way.
This is why I think Luna is superior. She can act as a role model as seen in the three CMC episodes where she enters their dreams. Or act as the character who learns something like that episode with the Tantabus. That’s called a multi-layered character.

The stuff about unicorns losing magic.
Why does their contribution to the natural world have to come at great cost, and be handed to the ruling class instead?

Yeah so why didn’t the Student 6 actually get lines then? And why the fuck does Starlight even do? Nothing that’s right.
