Exactly, it is obsolete and redundant when complex filters do the exact same thing with better and more precise results. Same goes for it’s negative counterpart too, which I see people abusing downvotes sometimes just to add the tag, which is a big no.  
Tags are not for your personal opinions, that’s what comments are for.

Not to stir the pot, but what exactly defines the drama in the comments tag? For instance, I remember the tag was mod-removed from that featured image of Flash Sentry a couple weeks ago (>>939728), but not for the recent Aryanne animation (>>986756), although the comments were pretty much identical.

There is no “official stance” on the tag. Tagging for the Flash image was locked before there was anything resembling drama to avoid the tagging vandalism present in other popular Flash images.
 
For all I care the tag could be nuked outright; all it is is a way for shitposters to find the latest hotbeds to defecate in.

I always thought it functioned as a warning. “This image has over 100 comments, but not in the fun way, know what you’re getting into here.” That kind of thing.

That’s an optimistic view of what it is. In my experience it’s just a beacon to attract trolls and professional arguers.

I admit my view is a bit optimistic, but I also see yours as a bit too pessimistic. Not everyone on this site is actually trying to spark trouble, you know, and I’m sure there are well-behaved users who find some benefit in knowing which images have been controversial. I don’t think the mods should go removing tags simply because they might draw in the wrong people from time to time. And hey, if certain people do cause trouble on those images consistently enough, then at least you know who to keep an eye on.
 
Personally, I check up on those images from time to time just to know what’s been going on around the site. Knowledge isn’t always pleasant, but it’s quite often helpful.

I was going to suggest doing a search for plushie, photo or plushie, -photo but a search for the latter still gives me a lot of real photos.

Some combination of photo and irl are all that’s needed, though. The tagging may be insufficient, but a whole new tag wouldn’t make a difference there.

Do mods happen to get certain powers that make it easier for them to make large-scale tag changes? I ask this, because many images with the star swirl the bearded tag should have the star swirl the bearded costume one instead, a change which would be very tedious to make in the normal fashion.

Is there a tag for post-s05ep18 CMCs? I would like to add it to my filter list.

Add “(sb || ab || sl), spoiler:s05e18” to your complex filters. I tried to do that search except negating the spoiler:s05e18 tag, and found none that were related to the CMCs’ new cutie marks

If s05e18 is set as a required condition, wouldn’t that only exclude images of the CMC in relation to that episode?
 
It doesn’t cover situations when the new design spills into standard fanart that doesn’t fall under the s05e18 tag (or any episode tag for that matter), much like with alicorn Twilight after-Magical Mystery Cure. Would a specialized tag be needed at some point?

Well, there’s the tag the cmc's cutie marks, which was created for s05e18, but that doesn’t seem to be on some of the new images. Perhaps someone should go through and add it to those before there becomes too many.
