Another problem besides the “boy-ish girl is probably gay” stereotype is the whole “rainbow” theme. People often see “rainbows = gay” being another stereotype, (rainbows used to be associated with “being gay”) so there’s plenty of “unfortunate implications,” as well if she does become gay.
 
Let’s not forget that Mrs. Magazine lady’s article who tried to label Rainbow Dash as a “lesbian stereotype,” when she was accusing the show of being “racist,” “homophobic,” “smart-shaming,” and such when it first came out. (Prompting a very epic/famous rebuttal from Lauren Faust.) Ironically, Faust’s rebuttal, (denouncing that Dash had a sexual-preference) and such might’ve been what helped make the show more popular.
 
Honestly, I don’t see why people insist Dashie, or every character has to be gay, or whatever. Her sexuality, or any other characters’ isn’t an important aspect of the show, or an important thing about her character. If anything for the time being, the only pony she’s in-love with is herself.
 
I hate to say it, but people only seem to like certain characters being a lesbian, is because they have some kinda “fetish,” or “thrill” for that kinda thing. I don’t hate lesbians, but I never really got excited watching two women kiss. I guess I’m one of the few bronies like that.

What am I saw in 90-00 in cartoons and games?  
Helpless princess who must be saved and prince or some macho who should save her.  
Over and over again amorphous girls and a heroic man. I’m tired of this shit, this is annoyingly stereotypical.  
But now in MLP I see a girl, who is better than any guy. Who can be a knight in shining armor.  
Knight need his princess. So, thats how I see it.  
RD for me is too awesome for any sorta guy, she need a perfect girl.  
(Ofc RD’ character not only in MLP)

Yeah, I don’t know how it was in other countries. But in the states, especially around the 90’s/early 2000’s (Possibly more before that, but I grew up in the 90’s so that’s what I know) That stereotype existed. SO it’s likely that other bronies who also grew up around that time would have the stereotype ingrained into their minds and would be sick of hearing it again.
 
So likely the negative reaction to Rainbow Dash being lesbian is simply from being tired of hearing it immediately just based off of a character’s outward appearance. Yes people can still choose to ship Rainbow Dash as a lesbian for reasons more in-depth than “She’s tomboy with rainbow hair”, but the negative connotation still exists.
 
At least that’s how it is for me. I can’t speak for anyone else here~
