Yes. It, however, does tend to rely on the writer at the time to determine if the situation will be “lol rarity has him in the friendzone” or “aww look how much he loves her!”
Its been hinted at way longer. His crush has been there since the very first episode of G4. Its always been a joke until Secret of my Excess. You might say he’s starting to win her over since the days she treated him like a pin cushion.
Considering season 7 was hard-coding about interspecies relations, they might have opened the door to show that Spike’s affection for her isn’t “weird” and she wouldn’t be seen as “weird” for accepting it.
Are they preparing the waters for an eventual canon?
