He had a chance to ask her because she stayed behind to stare with uncertainty at the trophy. She didn’t like that Twilight mentioned it was a pony event with pony traditions. In the frame before he asked her, Sandbar clearly looked back at her with concern. And yes, he was nervous asking her, which could very well be an indication of attraction. But asking someone to a dance is nerve racking nine times outta ten. Smolder being the 1/10.
 
I could be wrong and over analyzing this, I’m just describing what I saw.

Just personally, I didn’t think this felt too shippy. Sure, there was a crap-ton of blushing and teasing about “she did it just for you,” but I don’t know. I just didn’t feel the spark. It felt more like he asked her because he saw she was nervous and wanted her to be comfortable.
 
I mean, Smolder asked Gallus to the dance, but there was no romance, or any indication that it was more than friends hanging out. They were never even separate from the group.
 
I could be totally wrong, and just wasted your time reading all that. But it just seemed to fall flat of shipping. That said, I still look forward to all the art this will inspire!
