I don’t get it. Yeah, Fling chucks the Pokemon’s held item at the enemy (kinda stupid in this case), but is there a part of this joke I’m not getting?

A Drapion would completely break that team. A Drapion with Earthquake, Rock Slide, Cross Poison, and Crunch, holding an Expert Belt, would probably be enough to wipe this team out quickly and efficiently.
Better yet, paired with a Scarf’d Skuntank that spams Screech, that team would go down so fast you’d have to wonder why Generation IV got that much of a leg-up on Fairy-types.
