Description
Yes, the art in this comic really is this bad and the story this stupid.
They can’t even color inside the lines half the time.
They can’t even color inside the lines half the time.
That pony’s packin’ heat!
.-.
Well, what can I say? I really liked the way you described this comic. But Issue 15 wasn’t bad, and the “contuinity error” you mention… It was Applejack, and she was one of the few who didn’t get Ahuizotl’s name right.
About this comic… I’m not gonna lie: I loved it. It stuck right into the “so bad is good” category. Yeah, the artwork is lazy and the story makes no sense at times, but the sheer amounts of ridiculousness and over-the-topness make it really damn funny. Marine Sandwich with the freeze ray was just so silly I laughted for minutes after that scene with the griffon and the rotten pickles.
Issue 15’s main problem was that it came after issues 11 & 12, and they had pointless reference after pointless reference, so now that reference actually have purpose everyone is fed up with them. Still… I agree with you. It was a nice change of pace after the mashup of the main series. It’s kind of like why I ADORED the Annual compared to the Shining Armor arc: Great pacing, good drawing, and a story that didn’t bothered to rely in 80’s shows shout outs and instrad came out as the only comic so far which only refereces in-universe stuff (character cameos, refering to certain events, etc.)
Spoilers below
First, pacing. This comic had much better pacing than Issue 15. Issue 15 threw everything at the reader at once and expected you to just go along with it. Like Twilight being unable to use magic until the story was complete. That should have been set up before the characters delved into the stories. But Friends Forever 1 took its time to set up its story. I wasn’t having to flip backwards to see if I missed something because a new development seemed out of place. The reader gets a good chance to understand exactly what is happening and doesn’t feel rushed.
Next, the story. With all respect to the OP, do not listen to his/her attempt to make you judge this book by its cover. For me, this issue was a nostalgia trip of good old goofy comic book villainy. The action comics genre has grown stale with grim and gritty villains (even if I enjoy many of them). But I miss the days when all one needed was a freeze ray and an evil laugh. If you’re approaching this comic trying to take it seriously, you’re going about it wrong. Just let the silliness set in and serve as a framing device for the central themes in this comic of sportsmanship and being yourself.
And that leads to my last point, originality. I hate to keep harping on Issue 15, but it was overly dependent on revisiting established things from the show, like Daring Do and magically jumping into stories. This clinging to the cartoon likely cost Issue 15 the possibility of being canon because its references to the current season resulted in a difficult-to-reconcile continuity error. But Friends Forever 1 did not rely on the show, giving us two new characters I’d like to see more of (Toffee and Marine) and a look at how mass media works in Equestria. Plus frosting-coated ponies! Mmmmm.
Give this comic a try!
Pinkie tried to make bad dishes because they were trying to help Toffee win.
The fight only lasts six pages.
Or “it’s just an MLP comic, who cares?”
Yeah, that bit could have been completely cut without changing anything (Marine could have been in the audience or working her way to the stage, she didn’t have to be “remote” for her insane trigger to be flipped.
But this is why you have editors to say “okay, you had an off day - try again on the art please tomorrow”.
Everyone has an off day. I was just expecting more Pinkie/AJ interaction and didn’t get why Pinkie tried to make bad dishes.
Plus, there is no TV in Equestria.
There is actually a “decent” story here.
But
And the sadder part is that this is now the.. 27th? book that has come out under the MLP title and I would have though more quality control on these now would be standard.
That’s just it.
The best description I’ve seen for this issue is “a comic from a bizarro world where no one gave a shit about the MLP comic and decided that kids were really stupid, so you could half-ass your work.”
Also, it’s supposed to be all-ages and IDW has been doing a very pretty decent job on it.
Strange, isn’t it? I mean all you need to do is taking a NSFW image of Fluttershy and recolor it.
Same here. That, in my opinion, is the best MLP comic so far.
He also did the art for Pinkie’s micro series issue.
I think you’re talking about Curtsibling. If so, you’re not alone; I thought the same thing.
Curtsibling?
Or about half the superhero output of DC during the “Silver Age”.
