This makes me shudder because most types of food dye, especially red dye, taste absolutely awful. Red dye in particular tastes like insecticide. Ever licked a Switch cartridge? It tastes like that.

I hate that taste and I’ve always disliked most kinds of birthday cake because of it.

Last time I got a cake (from my coworkers at my previous job), I specifically requested no dye. Thankfully, they delivered. The writing was in chocolate sauce instead. :P
