EDIT: If this bothers you, you should be aware that its just an opinion. However, I’m clearly not the only one that shares this opinion. If that is the case, there’s probably a reason why many fans think this way about Starlight.

Dude, I know. I never state any of my opinions as facts. Its down there.

I mean, I’ve seen hundreds of shows and hundreds of characters and whatnot too. I’ve seen badly portrayed characters that just take me out of a show and remind me that I’m watching something fictional. I don’t think I’ve ever accused Starlight of being perfect or without faults in her writing, but so far she doesn’t take me out of the show.

If it makes you feel any better, she’s not real. She has no feelings or consciousness. She’s a puppet, a fictitious animated cartoon character made to be portrayed that way by REAL people in her fictional world. Just one of hundreds of fictional characters who share the same tropes, arch-types and situational writing formulas I have encountered over the years as an animation enthusiast. Starlight is badly written and badly portrayed.

It’s a bit annoying being told I’m grasping when I try to use actual moments from the show to back up my points, but fair enough.

I get why people dislike her, but I just don’t agree. I feel like she gets a bum rap for things that are blown out of proportion and doesn’t gel with what happens in episodes a lot of the time.

Look, clearly you’re just gonna grasp at straws made of thin air here so this is all I’m going to say. Starlight’s boring. More boring than AJ. At least AJ has an accent, a sister and bro, a grandma, a farm, a business. She’s more one note than Fluttershy. At least shy has an interesting debilitating personality disorder that if used properly can write itself.

Starlight has nothing going for her. She has no personality because she COPIED Twilight’s personality instead of having one unique of her own. Even the show is making fun of it. She’s just there now and is most likely gonna get her wings by doing a princess worthy deed later on for saving the day or whatever because clearly, plot contrivances states she’s more deserving than 5 other ponies who have been around since season 1.

But that’s what I mean, I don’t think she DOES always do the right thing. At least, not much more so than the rest of the cast do. She’s clearly screwed up on the path to doing the right thing several times, and even when doing the right thing, she’s not going on about how gosh darned great it is to do the right thing.

When she swapped the princesses cutie marks, in the very next scene she’s looking annoyed as hell, rolls her eyes, tells Twilight “I THOUGHT we moved past this. It was the right call,” then ends the scene by grabbing twilight and irritably shoving her in a drawer so she doesn’t have to listen to her anymore, even though she herself is concerned that she might’ve done the wrong thing too. To me that isn’t the action of a bland goody good, nor is it something Twi would even think of doing to Celestia.

That’s exactly why she has no personality. “She’s always doing the right thing.” A character doesn’t become “interesting” for always doing the right thing. Like I said, do something stupid, say something dumb. Boast ffs and don’t be sorry about it. Have a dream, have an ambition. Over react. Have a unique manner of speaking. An accent. Anything, please.

Note that her quirk used to be a very gifted unicorn when it comes to magic. That has lost its focus. It never relates to her character anymore and is instead used as a switch to progress a plot and then is dropped like a hot potato.

But Star isn’t a complete goody good. You’ve used the homework comparison before and I’ve never seen Star like that. Star isn’t really a person who constantly goes on about doing the right thing except in situations where it’s actually called for. It’s not like she’s a brown noser always trying to suck up to Twilight. She gives Twilight and the others shit at points, it’s not like she’s perpetually respectful.

Before Twi got her wings, she had a lot of personality. She had funny freak outs and took risks when making decisions. Starlight is trying to be portrayed in such a way but is poorly executed because she never does anything high risk. Her insecurities, if you can call them anything, are very plain and low key. Do something stupid. Make fun of another pony. Pull a funny face. Anything. Don’t be that student in class that reminds everyone to do their homework. Even damn AJ doesn’t do that. She has her own issues.

I still wish I saw this complete lack of personality that so many seem to level at Starlight. I don’t even disagree that she could probably do with having more, but to not only say she has none, but that she’s also exactly like Twilight feels really weird to me.

Hm… I am an… Original Starlight fan. I liked the villain version (season 5), I don’t like the Twilight expy version that has less personality than a cardboard (season 6 onward.)

Ever since G1, I don’t really remember a “pony” being a villain in the franchise. There was Nightshade but he had his own issues. I think Starlight had the potential to be the very first actual “pony” villain but she got reformed. I guess that was okay but why did it feel like she was completely replaced by a different character that had nothing to do with the season 5 character we saw? It even seemed like her age regressed and manner of speaking changed.

@kleptomage
Probably. We’ll never have a decent episode with Trixie because Starlight has to parasitically latch on to her personality. I mean, it doesn’t help that Starlight doesn’t have a personality of her own.
