I’ve heart that is was either an animation error or a joke … I haven’t seen any official confirmation for neither.

And contrary to popular belief, it was NOT an animation error; an animator snuck it in because he thought it was funny and thought that it would be covered up by other ponies in the scene, but then some of the ponies were moved around a bit and she was visible.

Yes, Derpy was just a regular background pony except for one scene in the first episode.

The Derped Derpy didn’t appear for real until episode 16, Sonic Rainboom.
