There is also a tradition in some parts of the Philippines where men would walk in the streets and whip their backs to draw blood. Some take it a step further and have themselves crucified on crosses. It is called ‘Penitensya’.

There’s a practice amongst religious types called “Flagellation”. Basicly punishing yourself with some kind of punishment tool.  
It started off as a form of penance in the Catholic Church in the 13th and 14th centuries. It was also used as a demonstration of piety when performed in a public area.
