This is really incredibly adorable. They’re ponies. This is horses in our world. You get so used to thinking of them as people you forget they’re horses and all that :q

Yes, that too. lol One of those things I didn’t even think about. I just hold the bit up to their lips as I’m putting on the rest of the bridle, and in it goes…eventually…once the horse is ready and opens up its mouth. lol

(and the bridle itself isn’t … people finds socks sexual; and that doesn’t make the image suggestive)

First and foremost, I am NOT an expert with horses, but I’ve enough experience with riding and caring for them, I’m familiar with the tack, and I own my own English saddle, so I guess I know a few things.
 
That said, it shouldn’t hurt a horse at all, really. If there’s a problem, it’s usually maladjustment, a hardware problem, or the rider is keeping too tight a rein. All the bit does is sit there in the mouth, and nothing more, until you pull the rein. Imagine a pencil, pen, or maybe a chopstick in your own mouth, ‘across’ it so the ends are out the left and right ends of your lips. Besides a little drooling, it’s not that uncomfortable, is it? Our mouths aren’t as ‘U-shaped’ as a horse’s either, so it’s even less uncomfortable for them.

This image is suggestive for the dirty minded. - but I vote for rating it as safe by the following:
 
View this as if Fluttershy would be a real taking little horse. If a human would ride her (like how you ride a horse), she still wants you to be gentle.
 
Fluttershy is weak and shy; and wants everyone to be gentle and careful around her, regardless of situation.

Hurt? I don’t think so, unless they’re super tight or whatever (a horse expert might be appreciated on this). But it sure must be damn uncomfortable to have a metal rod inserted into your mouth.
