Terfenol-D is a terbium/iron/dysprosium (more on that last component later) alloy responding to magnetic fields by stretching and shrinking. In particular, the later lanthanides are renowned for their magnetic properties and therefore what they give to more conventional magnets, either added strength or retaining power (vis-à-vis their fields). The very late ones reaching into 5d serve as generic refractory metals though.
