Once again, assuming death would ever happen in the show. Also assuming Chrysalis intended Twilight to find Cadance.
 
And once again, we know she’s evil. The comics just take it up to an extreme. What part of that aren’t you getting?

Every tinpot dictator and self-styled freedom fighter has pulled the “I’m doing this for my people” line, usually before they fill another mass grave of innocent civilians.
 
Face it, she’s evil. She likes to hurt people, and see them in fear of her. She’s a sadist and that’s enough to remove her credibility as a desperate leader looking to relieve her peoples suffering.

Actually after Sombra’s issue you can count him as someone fighting for his people now too
 
As I’ve said elsewhere on this site he’s basically TF Animated version Megatron now
 
Both guys who’s people are inherently evil and were beaten by the good guys
 
In the Decepticons’ case banished from their homeworld
 
In the Shadow Ponies’ case sealed underground
 
Now you have two guys who are seen as ruthless dictators but to themselves they’re noble freedom fighters work towards the liberation of their oppressed kind

I think you misunderstand. We know from the show she was manipulative and power-hungry. But the comics added murderous, psychotic, deranged, and vengeful to a fault to that list.  
You seriously cannot deny that’s a big jump.

There’s no “I’m doing this to survive” scenario here. She’s doing this cause she wants to control every pony, a dream she’s had since she was a child.

I can actually imagine Twilight looking at Nightmare Moon/Discord/Sombra and how they all broke free after 1000 years and coming to the wrong conclusion that that’s actually just the standardized sentence length for major offenders.

So, imprisoned for a thousand years. Makes me wonder if there are only two punishments in the Equestrian legal system. “Either we all become friends, or you’re looking at 1000 years of hard time. Wanna sit down and have a tea party?”

Well, this is what I feel this issue might address talking about these earlier events. Maybe initially she tries to live in harmony with the ponies, but a flaw of her character (she is a bit vain, after all) lead to this being impossible.

Power and territory if only to maintaining the whelped ponies as “livestock”, as it were, for the Changelings. Not power just to be all-powerful for no other reason (ala Tirek).

What’s interesting to me is that she’s doing what she does to sustain her race, meaning she’s not trying out for power or glory, but for survival, which is far different from, say, Tirek or Sombra (Sirens… eh maybe).
 
What this alludes to in this story, I hope, is maybe how she attempted to assure the Changeling’s survival in the past in a more cooperative manner with ponies and failed to do so, hence why her actions in Canterlot was “screw you ponies, we need to survive” with zero diplomacy.

Still, she never went full omnicidal crazy in the show from what we’ve seen of her.
 
I’m of the belief that a villain should be evil, but they should also have a good reason why they do what they do (Chrysalis in show needing a food source for her race). Not going into full KILL EVERYTHING mode. It helps to balance them out a bit.
 
It’s why I like Starlight Glimmer so much. Yes she’s doing some pretty morally questionable things, but she also seems to have a genuine desire for her weird version of equality.

In the show she kidnapped Cadance and left her trapped in a cave to starve to death, and invaded Equestria with the intent of turning its entire population into food for her subjects. Even if she didn’t outright kill ponies, best case scenario they’re looking at a vampire blood farm scenario.
 
She’s always been a monster, and that’s why I like her.

That’s if you take the first issue as law. Going by show alone, she’s evil, but has a good plan and wasn’t a total maniacal tool. It’s like they ratcheted her EVIL meter to 11 after that.
 
And no, I dont think of her as a misunderstood good soul, but I also dont think of her as someone that would do pogroms without hesitation.

Need I remind you that the comic’s position is doubious at best? It’s kind of hard to take the comics as in line with the show when there seems to be no attempt to reign in the writers and make sure the whole series is kept roughly cohesive.
 
Sure, it may result in some out of nowhere hits, but for the most part you get a jumbled mess comic to comic, each writer having a wildly different interpretation of the same pony.

Chrysalis is an unapologetically evil, soul-draining, genocidal monster. People seem to forget that because of all the fan art pretending she’s just some lonely little cherub who only ever wanted a hug.

Need I direct you to my earlier comment? This isn’t woobie fanfic Chrysalis, this is evil, blood-thirsty war criminal CANON Chrysalis. This isn’t the misunderstood victim countless fanfics have warped her into, this is the mare who tried to take over Equestria twice, kidnapped a Princess and then three fillies, committed GENOCIDE of the cat people and is all around EVIL. This is the kind of person you NEED to incarcerate or incapacitate so she doesn’t threaten anypony else!

Twilight, please.
