Yeah, it is canon. Meghan’s stance that it wasn’t canon only lasted a couple months before she reversed it.
Heh, that’s some interesting imagery. Twilight is trying to act all mature for Sunset’s sake in her messages, but when she’s with her friends after Rainbow Rocks, she always talking about how amazing her new senpai is.

Personally, I think they should hold off on Sunset’s return until they decide to stop doing Equestria Girls movies, and end the series with everyone graduating and Sunset returning to Equestria.
I don’t remember the Mane5 ever bumping into her. Though I could be wrong. Myself I have poor recognition for Strangers, and assuming the Mane5 had a “brush” with her it must have been quite brief. Then the crap with the Keys, and Tirek I’D be surprised if any of the Mane5 would know who she [Shimmer] was.

They all saw Sunset for a short time when she stole Twilights crown. Not enough to recognize her immediately, but Twilight must have told them about her as well. There is also her cutie mark on the book she uses to write between the dimensions, so that would be recognizable too.
