Br’er (or Brer) Rabbit, actually; “br’er” is a countryism (to use Applejack’s term) for “brother”.

Ahh. I see now that this is actually a reference to the Briar Rabbit story. But there is also a racial ‘tar baby’ thing as well.

There was a recent thing with a congressman describing working with Obama as “sticky as a tarbaby,” which while technically a correct metaphor, was probably not the best choice of phrasing.

You might consider it like “pot calling the kettle black” in that a lot of people mistakenly think it’s racist when it’s origins have nothing to do with race. But, as has been mentioned, in this case many of the people who made that mistake were actual racists who took to using it, incorrectly, as a slur. So… maybe, it really depends on the context.

@bico-kun
that’s actually a better explanation than wikipedia’s, which kind of just tiptoes around the whole thing.
Yes, I use wikipedia for information, even though I know it’s not always reliable

Because even though it began as a reference to this bit of folklore, it also sounds like something rude you could call a black person. People being what they are, it eventually became assumed among those unfamiliar with the actual origins that it was actually a slur and at this point it is actually used by some racists as a slur, so… kind of a weird, circuitous thing, but that’s how language works.

I’m from the South and have never heard it used; much worse phrases, but not that. I imagine most people only heard of it because of Toni Morrison’s book of the same name.

We Crossdress Harder
It’s used as a slur for black people in the American South and for Maori in New Zealand. It’s not very common, but it does get used.
