(Same guy) Better yet, look up Mega Man Classic, on Tvtropes.
Oh, no? Well, I can’t say anything about Sonic, but as for Mega Man… Well, look up the development of the first Mega Man game for NES on Wikipedia.
Sonic reminds me more of “Felix the cat” personally. In a way Megaman is also kinda like “Astro Boy.” Though, I haven’t seen official word yet that they were loosely-inspired by said characters.
@Prof.NightJack
Well, regardless my point still stands that they were inspired/influenced by those Popeye characters, at least.
As time went on though, Mario & DK developed more, and became less like those characters though. DK even has his own game series now, and is a good guy. (Usually.)
Still, that doesn’t change their original orgins that had some influence from Popeye.
Nah, man, Sonic has some design allusion to Mickey Mouse.
Heck, you may as well say Mario was heavily influenced by Micky Mouse as well because he wears red, white glove, and name starts with M.
*he wasn’t heavily
Well he was heavily influenced, there is some but I was pointing out it was the Donkey Kong game heavily influenced by Popeye, even with slight influenced on Mario’s early design in the artwork and role he wasn’t heavily influenced by Popeye like Rarewarefan said.
That is what I was correcting him on.
Yes, but sense Miyamoto couldn’t make a Popeye game, he made different characters instead slightly influenced by them.
If you look at the old official art of Mario/Jumpman from the original 1981 DK game, Mario oddly looks a li’l like Popeye.
Plus the whole concept of DK seems inspired by Popeye. “An average unattractive everyman VS a hulking brute to save his girlfriend” is basically the premise for both Popeye & DK.
The concept is similar, even if they aren’t the same exact thing.
@Rarewarefan
No, it’s the game Donkey Kong was influenced by Popeye because it was meant to be a Popeye game but the negotiations for the license fell apart, Mario himself was not influenced by Popeye, that’s a misunderstanding.
Yeah, plus when you think of the item power-ups (mushrooms & fire flowers) those also seem influenced by Popeye powering up from spinach.
As for the movie, while hopefully Nintendo has some input in it, I’d also be afraid of them meddling to much in it, and it’d never get done as a result. The film-makers need to have some freedom with the series.
Take the Zelda-mangas for example, while the makers of it went to Miyamoto for advise on making it, he still gave them plenty of freedom, and allowed them to change a few things to keep the manga’s story interesting, and unique, while having it’s own take/version on the games’ story adaptions.
Thank you for backing me up on that Beau. Now if only if Nintendo can give the go on allowing Sony animation to make an animated feature of Super Mario Bros. Hopefully it won’t face too many executives spoiling it to rot like how the live-action movie went through.
Mario was influenced by Popeye, DK was influenced by Brutus/Bluto.
In fact, Nintendo did make a Popeye arcade/NES game after DK. Sadly, due to licensing, it’ll likely never get a Virtual Console rerelease.
>Let alone that Mario was heavily influenced from Popeye from the start
Umm… it was Donkey Kong, not Mario.
Someone my brother knows that worked with Genndy said Genndy is a fan of Mario. Even though he’s not up to date with most of the mario games. Seeing the test footage of Popeye being ‘animated’ well in CG. I want to see Mario animated well like that in the veins of CG. It would be a breathe of fresh air for the Mario Bros. Let alone that Mario was heavily influenced from Popeye from the start(which a lot of gamers know).
I’d actually welcome that, assuming he knows anything about the Super Mario Brothers series.
@thps48
Pretty much, though I’m sure some Japanese fans argue about that to sometimes. The companies themselves seem quite friendly overall.
Seems like a mostly American and/or Western thing, console wars. :T
It was, he even praised the WiiU, and stated “Sony needs Nintendo to be successful to keep gamers interested in playing video games using sticks, and buttons.” (Refering to the rise in tablet gaming, and such.) So Nintendo & Sony are good terms. Japanese businesses usually are friendlier with each other’ competition.
Which makes all the Sony fanboy-hate agaisnt Nintendo quite ironic. (Even more ironic when you learn Nintendo is the reason for the creation of the Playstation back in the ’90s.) Never quite understood the fanboys of any kinda who hate every game company, but their favorite.
Your link didn’t come out right. And I thought it was a Japanese CEO who owned two WiiU’s, at least that’s what I heard…
Secondly, Sony and Nintendo apparently get on relatively fine, since Sony’s CEO owns two Wii U’s. (Source: http://www.google.com lol)
That reprint was from the ‘90s, (and it was also missing the “Mario & Wario trying to get Peach a Samus doll for her birthday” story) and it’s been out of print for a long time actually.
But that did get reprinted a few years ago.
I used to have it but lose it some time ago.
