DE does combat mostly for self-defense, and pursuing foes either for tasks given or for fun on his own time. Though, his family can distantly trace its ancestry to a powerful Qilinese general who lived over a millenia ago, and his father, grandfather, and great grandfather were former servicemen for the previous dynasty that was usurped decades ago.

Right, Azure doesn’t just live for it, it’s just what he was raised for. He tries to dabble in writing (though he’s not as poetic as he’d hope), gardening and star gazing. And since you’re guy is a bit more refined he might have a good chance considering Azure’s more of a berserker.

DE isn’t exactly a specialized magician like Twilight and Sunset are, nor is he the most book smart, despite being somewhat literate in book magic. Amateurish on most part. But he’s not stupid on most part, and is street smart, much of his magic is a mixture of inherent, self taught and learned from watching others perform them. A chunk of his combat capabilities is supplemented in martial art.  
But there is more to life than combat, right?

Really who knows? I mean your guy at least has some grasp of magic. Azure completely sucks at it. Really the only things Azure has is experience and his refusal to give up. That only gets so far cause he has been overpowered before. Tirek wiped the floor with him and it was only a matter of time before the Changeling Horde took him down.

Double Edge is a vigilante/freelance part-time magical sword stallion who has a degree of wushu martial arts and self-taught magic. Around Rarity’s level but enough to teleport. Not raised as a warrior, and lead a decent life in a loving family. But he built himself through self-training on his own time and occasionally on his day job.  
He contemplated on joining the Equestrian Military, but he prefers freedom, more control over his schedule, and brushed them off as amateur hacks.

Well unfortunately I think Azure’d take Double Edge off his pedestal and teach him his place. Azure’d welcome the challenge but considering he was raised to be a warrior, I kinda doubt your guy would stand a chance. I’m not saying Azure’s OP, he’s gotten his flank kicked numerous times, but the difference definitely would come down to experience (or numbers if your guy had help)

Double Edge.  
A Qilinese Equestrian unicorn. Who’s family immigrated to Western Equestria where he and his little brother grew up from the island of Foalmosa escaping an anticipated takeover by the new Mainland Qilina Dynasty. His great grandfather was of aristocratic background who’s family lost pretty much every material wealth when they escaped to Foalmosa from the said corrupt new dynasty. In Equestria, he’s pretty much just a middle class pony.

Yeah, Pony Creator limitations… except for the cutie mark, it’s pretty much how I envision him.  
Somewhere mixed between a pretty boy and a tough smart guy or thinks he’s tough and smart.
