In some parts of the country this is called a “swap meet”, and yes, the idea isn’t to make a profit, it’s to get rid of stuff you don’t want anymore and hopefully find something you might like.
@Soarinjack
+1.
Also, new headcanon: one of the reasons the princesses instituted the trade day was so that the ponies could learn the value of using currency and a free market system :p
haha this explanation is pretty spot on. I have a feeling the exchange is just for fun like a convention. I mean one of the main reasons we have money is so people don’t have to struggle with bartering like they showed in this episode. we know they have currency in the form of bits and gems so trading is a strange thing to do but there is potential for profit if your into putting in all that effort lol.
Of course you can, but some ponies just might not want to sell them for money, but would gladly trade them for something they want.
Pretty much every civilization started that way.
@Soarinjack
You can’t buy rare items with money?
For fun? Because some ponies like bartering for a day? Especially if it means then can get rare tiems.
I mean, it’s not like they’re forced to attend. The Ponyville market use bits, as do the Apples when selling cider or applepies at Galas.
i dunno, maybe is a fair that was specifically designed to be that?
fun fact: in ancient times in my country, trade off was the currency, then the Spaniards arrived…
“I’ll trade you 200 bits for that book!”
But WHY?
