Except the mesmotron didn’t turn off their minds so much as prevent logical thought

Sometimes by blowing up the target’s head. Though I suppose that does still prevent logical thought.

For that it would have to be permanent, otherwise they’d just snap out of it and get very angry and confused

To be fair, the comic doesn’t specify whether the spell is or isn’t permanent. We assume that Twilight wouldn’t use such a spell on one of her friends if it were permanent, but she may have come up with a temporary version of it, or it may just be temporary anyway, but a permanent version would probably be well within her power.
