It probably also depends on the food you’re eating. Sweeter foods might be able to be balanced out by a spicier bbq sauce and vice versa.

You are right, however, that getting the balance right is key. Keep away from the Kraft shit, however, and you’ll usually be fine.
Depends on the barbeque sauce. Can’t be too sweet, that’s disgusting. Can’t be too spicy (tends to overpower the flavor of the meat). Weird flavors (like raspberry or cola) are out.
