From the production side, this gives them 5 characters they can choreograph on stage (Pinkie behind drums) during the rock numbers. A standard keyboard/synth would fill out the music but force her to stay still for the songs.

Rarity with a piano makes sense in terms of its elegance, etc. But it’s a bitch to drag around, so a keytar is a reasonable suitable replacement.
