I was being deliberately oblivious. I caught the slang being referenced from the get-go. I love how that started an on-going conversation.

“I’d give up rocks for your embrace” would probably resolve this issue.

I have a feeling she was reciting her poems in chronological order, so the first she read was the earliest of her works

She loves her family, sure, but beyond that it was pretty heavily implied that her entire life revolves around rocks.

I have doubts that Maud is even capable of feeling romantic love in the first place, much less to the extent that she’d be willing to give up rocks.

Balls are not like rocks though. If you punch a rock you hurt your hand. Also never heard anyone use rocks for balls.

My thoughts are the same as Deserter’s again. Maybe with another girl/pony/whatever I could interpret it that way, but not Maud.
 
Thinking about it a little more, Maud might be a little too literal-minded to make that connection herself.

she’s obsessed with rocks; the first thing she did upon entering ponyville was to identify a rock. going out on a limb here, but maybe anon was enough to pull her away from something she found that interesting and made it worth more to her than her studies? that could be an interpretation of it…
