Easy.

take the gifs (or the _thumb versions) of both pics
dump all the individual frames. If you’re lucky, they’re both timed the same and have the same amount of frames.
convert all frames to png format.
add the border with the score etc around all the frames. H = height with border.
convert -size 4xH xc:none spacer.png
convert +append leftpic## spacer.png rightpic## combinedpic## for every frame number.
convert combinedpic* -delay <theoriginaldelay> +map out.gif
upload out.gif, make sure the description has links to the individual pics, and report >>555767 as a duplicate of the newly uploaded animated one.

Piece of cake, no?
Note for step 5: you could also use xc:white but that will look horrible should we ever change the site’s background color.
