Update: This is written by A. K. Rogers. She’s done excellently so far this season, so my hopes are raised.

It’s been argued that because the main characters burst into song often, Sweetie’s talent is rendered redundant. Putting Flutters aside for the moment, we’ve seen impressive singing from the other main characters. Pinkie in particular is a great singer, thanks to excellent vocals. However, in her case, it is justified because Pinkie generally sticks to a poppy style appropriate for parties and cheering up others, and she isn’t specifically known as an exceptional singer as much as just bursting into random songs. Also, montage license may have an effect in general.
 
Here’s my beef. Sweetie Belle has been shown to be an especially excellent singer for her age, and it’s part of her character that she has yet to discover herself. If Fluttershy is shown to be a particularly exceptional singer, especially outside her typically quiet range, it’s going to open a severe characterization and continuity flaw. She will basically have Sweetie’s defining talent as another auxiliary skill alongside her own extremely well developed talent. That renders Sweetie Belle less interesting for the sake of again spotlighting Fluttershy and cheapens what I think could be considered the show’s longest-running subplot.
 
One way the writers may have avoided that would be minding that somewhat like Pinkie, Flutters has a specific style of singing. Specifically, Fluttershy would be good at singing lullabies (“Hush now, quiet now”) and maybe showtunes (Cutie Mark Chronicles), as per her nurturing talents. As already established, then, she can sing well, but would not all-out excel at a modern pop or rock style. Meanwhile, Sweetie Belle maintains her talent as a boisterous or possibly versatile singer, and all is well.
 
Thus, I certainly can’t review the episode ahead of time and say this will happen, but I am cynical enough on this point from earlier blunt moments in S4 that I’m worried it will. Let me put it this way. I said “Bats!” had the potential to go horribly wrong. IMO, it did. Yet this could play much worse because of the immediate implications.

I’d like them to get their marks during Skyla’s debut, but that’s simply my Skyla-faggotry talking. :3
