Okay…what if Celestia presumably being the one who enacted the enchantment having been taken and her magic isolated from the world in the grip of discords vines,the enchantment failed for all the guards ponies except the unicorns ones who would able to cast the enchantment on themselves while any earthpony guards would be rendered mundane.If anything since the spell is attached to guard it would let them know when the princess was in real trouble instantly.

Presumably one of Twilight’s first acts as Princess was to change Celestia’s racist recruitment policies.

I’m surprised no one has mentioned the brown Unicorn Guard in “Princess Twilight Sparkle” yet. First time that an unnamed Guard looked different from the rest.

Notably, if there’s an officer/enlisted distinction in the guard as their is in the U.S. Army, you could have some soldiers joining directly into the not-identical ranks. Which would explain how Flash is ‘the new guy’ and yet not the bottom rank. He could be like a fresh second lieutenant.
 
…or he could’ve transferred from somewhere else, of course, and only be new to that particular post, not to the guard in general.

Right in the first episode Twilight mentions wanting to get away from Rarity “before she decides to dye my coat a new color”, so coat dye is apparently a thing.
 
Every non-standard guard we’ve seen could just be explained away as the practice only applying to the rank-and-file.

I saw that Headcannon too. It’s not a bad idea, but I think it only given to a special line of the military who job it is to protect the Princess to the point they are trained to ignore anything that doesn’t look like a threat and all look the same.
 
Guys like Sentry are low end. No one would trust him to protect the Princess.

Doesn’t explain the white coats and their blue tails,you could argue they dye them for cohesion but seems a mundane solution in a magical world in which this organization could clearly afford some sort of enchantment that is not only more convenient(as it only stays when on duty) but could also encompass additional protection wards or something.

Or they just all have the same short-cropped hair like every military ever, and the head crest is part of the helmet like a Roman soldier’s, and that one dude who took off his helmet in Princess Twilight just happened to have hair that matched his helmet’s.

Agreed,Shining armor had a custom armor and no enchantment because the unicorn enchantment gives them black fur while he had the standard but apparently natural blue and white colors,plus Flash sentry is probably the head of the crystal empires expeditionary force so no enchantment for him.

Wow, Dash is actually pretty short.

It’s more the lower ranks of guards in that headcanon, the higher ranks don’t have the enchantment on there armor.

It was more it changes there coat, mane, tail, and eye color, not the rest of there looks.
