Also, don’t forget, they both contain a main character giving up their healthy food related entry to a competition in order to save their friend ;)

Actually I think I saw this kind of plot for the first time in Terror from the Crypt. And it was based on a story by some author who published the original in the Weird Tales.
 
It is a pretty oooooold one. But it works. ^^
