Not that I object to basilisk. If J.K. Rowling wants to use it for the Chamber of Secrets, that’s her choice. But Greek mythology had dibs on the word first.

That literally means “snakedragon”. Maybe that’s why they didn’t pick it. Then again, translators can make mistakes.

The problem is that there’s not really a good translation for “cockatrice” in Dutch, and just transliterating it phonetically sounds weird. The closest well-known mythical creature would be the basilisk, but that would probably draw too much attention to Harry Potter. This seems like a fairly decent translation, actually.
