Of course we’ll have to over-analyze this. If teenage dragons have wide physical variation, and fully adult dragons do not, what does that say about dragon genetics?

Sorry if my tone seemed negative. Without any reason given for the comparison, it seemed to me it was arranged intentionally to draw attention to the reuse of one model. I noted the obvious, and didn’t quite understand how it was noteworthy. I don’t consider it to be a bad thing, any more than any of the other reused models. You’ve read more into my comment than was there. Sorry if my intentions weren’t clear.

So the “teen-age” dragons were designed to be visually distinct, while the two different adult dragons didn’t need it and so they were animated with a recolor of the same model.
