“What I mean is that I’ve unfortunately ran into people that honestly think the English language originates from the USA and think that the British accent is a entirely different language.”
It’s more of the different terms and spellings that causes people to separate them than the accent
@BigMax
Nah, it’s like French. Modern Latin and French are a pain in the ass cause they both instead of creating new words use entire phrases to describe something. What I mean by that is instead of “airplane” it is, “the machine that moves through the air”, or they just cheat and use words from other languages.
If we still used Latin in everyday communication a paper on computers engineering would be as long as “war and peace”.
Personally if I had to take a guess of what language is going to be spoken hundreds of years from now it is probably going to be a singular language that is mostly a combination of Chinese, English, and Spanish. The reason being is that the number of words leaking into each language is accelerating rapidly to the point if you visit Hong Kong or such and look at signs you’re see a lot of them are in a mix between Chinese and English. A lot of English words are bleeding into Spanish, and a lot of Chinese and Spanish words are beginning to bleed into English.
One of the biggest causes for why English is bleeding into Mandarian(Chinese) is that their view on English is that if you want your kids to be successful you HAVE to teach them English.
If we were still using Latin it would not be possible for it to evolve in such a manner so quickly and we would just wind up using something else eventually anyhow.
@cb5
“Instrumentum computatorium”. Or just “computatorium”.
A century ago those words were non existent in English too. It’s just that Latin lagged behind because it’s a dead language since the Middle Ages.
(Almost dead, actually. It’s still currently used in Vatican. I wonder if they really created new words for their needs?)
@BigMax
Yeah latin is pretty great, but do you think it would work in modern times considering there’s no latin words for “computer”, “quantum chrono-dynamic-gage-inveriental-agrongie” and such?
@Prof.NightJack
What I mean is that I’ve unfortunately ran into people that honestly think the English language originates from the USA and think that the British accent is a entirely different language.
The thing that these people fail to realize is that the difference in accents and vocabularies from English speaking nations is that English is the awkward love child of a countless other languages. Most of our vocabulary actually comes from other languages and we just added them to the English language.
People that get upset about “proper” English fail to realize that according to our great grandparents we would all be according to them speaking “slang”, and that according to our great grandparents they would be speaking “slang”, and so forth.
If we all were so focused on keeping the language “pure” we would all be speaking Latin instead, cause modern English was considered “commoner” English when old English was spoken, and that old English was considered “commoner” language back when it was being used.
@cb5
If you mean “American” about the language, I can agree but you could make an argument it’s “American English”, But I don’t really follow you on the accent part.
What do you mean by that?
@thps48
The sad thing is with how few people that speak English as their native language know proper English I don’t care when a non-native English speaker doesn’t speak it fluently.
I just wish people in my country would stop calling it “American”, and stop calling the British accent, “British”.
@thps48
i’m more disappointed in the cliche idea of insect between these two and apple bloom being a product of that
but when i first saw this image it was said that it was translated
and if i’m going to translate something i’m going to make sure it is accurate
So, the complaints that broken English is a bad thing proves my English teacher correct. First World guys are jerks and you’re perpetuating a system of xenophobia, homophobia, sexism, and racism, albeit invisible to the usual cunt, to keep the less fortunate down…
(While I’m taking this class I’ll be saying things like this. It’s perfectly fine if everypony ignores this shit. Inequality’ll definitely be resolved during my later years, but for now I’mma be cool. <.<; )
