That field that was being mined by another group? Not exactly just laying around if someone else has already started in on it. Especially since Rarity has to go well outside Ponyville to reach it.
Dragons have large amounts of time to acquire their hordes, so them having gems just means that they’ve done some raiding. Keep in mind, neither Spike nor the green adult had a hoard made mostly of gemstones, so only one of the three we’ve seen displayed a preference for collecting them.
Also, Spike doesn’t live off of gems. They’re used more as a treat rather than as a staple food. Children’s junk food, really.
Equestria probably has more of them than the real world, but they’re a far cry from being common.
They seem to have fields of gems lying around. And judging by the fact that dragons eat gems and how large they are, I’d suspect that the planet had a large supply of the stuff.
So numerous?
Anyway, even crystals can be affected by the environment around them. Changing in a way that a magical creature could detect isn’t an odd idea.
Of course that leads me to think that there must be ponies/dragons that actually create gems. {Possibly. But with them being so numerous, it wouldn’t be actually needed.}
He also knows when sapphires are in season.
In that context, aging seemed to be a reference to aging brandy or cheeses.
I don’t know how. I just know that he mentioned that he’d been aging it for months waiting for it to be ripe so he have it as a birthday present to himself. {I have no idea how one can know when a gem is ripe, but that’s dragons for you.)
How? Why? We know that gems are mined, so why would that one be different?
Even taking into account the unexplained rock farms, he wasn’t at one of those, and the fire ruby is a gemstone instead of a rock.
I believe he grew the Fire Ruby.
Rarity gave him a share of gems for helping her dig them up in A Dog and Pony Show.
Aside from that, he’s been shown to have buying power independent of Twilight, most obviously when he bought that Fire Ruby. And judging from how Rarity reacted to it, it was quite expensive.
Because God forbid the possibility he actually LIKES sleeping like that.
Also, I’m pretty sure he got paid in gems for doing tasks in at least one episode.
Also “slave” and “pet”. We haven’t seen him get an allowance for all the work Twilight makes him do, and he sleeps in a freaking cat-basket!
Inside Twilight’s heart: “I can’t believe it… I’m a mother… <3”
@Sjogre
Oh wow,that was…so silly,but cute and sad at the same time D:
And Twilight’s your sister. Faust knows that she isn’t exactly ready to be a mother.
This one. >>166532
I don’t know, but I remember it was just made up of screencaps from the show. I also remember not knowing whether or not to laugh from the sheer ridiculousness of Spike dreaming it or to feel bad for him.
@Background Pony
Meghan McCarthy tends to write Spike and Twilight pretty sympathetically, so maybe.
I agree with everything you just said.
This would be something I hope the writers of season 4 would touch on, since it would make for some interesting development between the two, and shed some light on their relationship when spike was younger.
Which comic was that again?
-Spike The Dragon,Winter Wrap Up,S1.
You people gave a punchline too much relevance, besides, you cannot take too seriously the words of a half awake individual and I tell you that from experience.
Sad.
@Background Pony
I don’t think Twilight realizes how important Spike sees her in his life. I mean yeah, she’d probably be sad if he left, but she doesn’t realize that he has literally no one else he’s ever had any sort of long-term bond with. He wants someone to consistently be there, and he’ll take even somepony like Twilight if she’s willing to keep him around.
I guess, it kinda does (well thankfully this is just my kooky opinion, and not something from the show).
Spike’s always struck me as odd. On occasion, he can be very independent. Twi leaves him alone in the library all the time, and he seems to manage well. In the crystal empire, he says his fear is twilight rejecting him (kinda odd how it isn’t celestia, if she was truly his mom in canon).
Which led me to think that, he’s attached himself to twi, the only thing in his life that’s stayed consistent, and doesn’t want it to go away. Being her assistant, in his opinion, is what keeps her happy and wanting him around. He’s scared that if he doesn’t be useful to her, she’ll reject him, and he’ll be alone again.
Again this is just my crazy opinion.
