Well, that disparity might be explained by their resemblance to social insects. Among ants and bees, sex determination happens differently; unfertilized eggs will hatch into male drones while fertilized eggs hatch into female workers and queens. The workers, as you might have inferred from the name, do most of the work around the colony (gathering food, building nests, fighting off invaders), while the queens and drones just reproduce. If changelings work like that, it makes sense that the invasion force would consist mostly of female workers, with one queen to get a colony established.
Still, I do find the idea of changelings not having fixed sexes to be an interesting one. It would be amusing if they regarded being male or female as something similar to wearing different shirts.
I’ve always assumed that changelings either don’t have a proper gender in their true form or are all herms.
If changelings had a definite sex and could only change to forms of that gender, it would mean that every single one of the changelings that the mane six fought in Canterlot Wedding were female, which if they do have separate genders would be highly unlikely.
One thing to note is that Doomie has only been shown taking female forms. If they’re male, that would imply that a changeling’s sex can change with their form, making “male” and “female” less relevant for them. The only way this particular changeling could have a defined, certain sex is if they’re female.
In which case they shouldn’t be calling them freaking insects, or even referring to them as having a gender, as the non-insect usage is mindless robots.
Even less sex.
I think they mean ‘drone’ in the context outside insects.
…All drones are for mating….
Soldiers and workers are all female. Just a bit of terminology that far too many people have a habit of misusing when they talk about insects. Annoys the heck out of me.
Why would a drone need more intelligence than workers or soldiers? Kind of a silly idea.
I think most people reason Doomie is male just because he’s the only one we see acting like more than a drone. Granted, changelings all look alike, so it’s probably not Doomie in all those ACW screencaps doing non-drony things, but fans have taken them all as Doomie, and postulate he’s either gifted in some way, or a mating drone.
I say they’re whatever gender they feel like for the situation at hand considering taht they’re shape shifters and there are multiple species in pretty much every grouping other than mammals (and maybe in that group as well, I just haven’t heard of it yet) that can switch genders completely if there are too many of one gender in the group.
Chrysalis was the only one of them that had a hair substitute, so lacking eyelashes could be excused under that.
Anyway, Earlier in that season, Rarity’s Crackle costume was identified as male despite having eyelashes. Mistress Harshwhinny is female despite having nearly invisible eyelashes. Not actually a set in stone identification.
As opposed to, say, plucking her eyelashes so she can put in the longer ones.
As far as I can remember, the other thing that almost all female creatures in this show have are eyelashes.
Only Chrysalis has eyelashes.
This is one reason some people say Rarity is transgendered.
Given that the show never says, we have to guess. The one changeling with a defined gender was female, and had a feminine snout. Given the information available, I guess female.
All that can be said for certain is that they look androgynous.
Zecora does have a masculine snout, by pony standards, and we don’t know if that’s standard, but I’m comparing changelings to other changelings as well as ponies.
and the only zebra we’ve ever seen is a female but has a male pony snout.
you really shouldn’t put too much stock in comparing other species to ponies.
I generally think that most people overestimate how much they resemble insects, but that doesn’t change the fact that the rank and file changelings look more female than male.
I’ve never understood why this fandom tends to dismiss changelings as insects.
It’s not like they were gendered in the show, so nothing contradicts it.
I’m pretty sure Doomie’s male.
She?
