My theory is that, since they have the first name, and since Petunia is an Earth Pony, and since they come from a small town like Sunny does, it could be.
Unfortunately, I don’t think the show is going to make the connections to G4 as much as some of us would like them to, so it’s going to be largely on fan theories to try to explain how the world of FiM transitioned into G5. I see them as having a sweet personality that’s similar to Sunny’s dad. They probably instilled good values into his dad and they were passed on to Sunny herself.
Also, I like the theory, because Rainbow Roadtrip is like the only thing FiM related that hardly anyone even remembers existing, so it gives it a little more value to the franchise as a whole if it were true.
